NEWS RELEASE: Rep. Walker Hines' “Parental Responsibility Act” Passes
Criminal Justice Committee

Contact: State Rep. Walker Hines (504) 756-4675

The House Criminal Justice Committee today approved House bill 383 by
Rep. Walker Hines (D-New Orleans) to allow for judges to sentence the
caretaker of minors convicted of misdemeanors to be sentenced to
community service. If the caretakers refuses to complete community
service, they can be fined. Hines cited Louisiana’s growing violent
crime rate amongst teenagers and significant high school dropout rate
as the primary reasons for holding parents more accountable for the
actions of their children.

“The parental responsibility act will encourage parents to be more
involved and engaged in their children’s lives. An absent parent
leads to children breaking curfew, dropping out of school, and heading
to the streets,” said Hines.

Rep. Hines said the idea for the bill came after discussing new
solutions for fighting crime with Major Bruce Little of the 2nd
District New Orleans Police Department. The Criminal Justice
Committee moved favorably by a vote of 10-2. The bill now heads to
the floor for a vote by the entire House of Representatives.
