NORD ENCOURAGES YOUTH TO TRAIN AS LIFEGUARDS IN ANTICIPATION OF THE SUMMER AQUATICS PROGRAM KICK OFF


WHAT: The New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) is currently offering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and lifeguard training for those interested in participating in NORD's 2009 Summer Aquatics Lifeguard Program. The trainees will work directly for the department.

WHERE: Those interested in applying for the program should visit the NORD Main Office located at 800 Race Street to complete an application. CPR training classes will be administered at NORD's St. Bernard Center located at 1500 Lafreniere Street.

WHO: Only certified individuals ages 16 and older are invited to sign up for a NORD sponsored CPR/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) class. Those interested applicants will be required to submit valid certified lifeguard documentation or card for the class.

WHEN: The AED class will be held on April 25th at 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The City hopes to certify more than 70 lifeguards that participated in the 2008 Aquatics Program.

The beginner training schedule is as follows:

CLASS SCHEDULE
May 11th-14th and May 18th-23nd
4:45 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Saturday, May 23rd CPR - A.E.D Training
NORD Main Office - 800 Race Street
9:00 a.m. - 3:00p.m.

Wednesday, May 26th Final Lifeguard Training Day
4:45 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Pre conditioning classes will be offered for returning lifeguards and new candidates for this year's program. Location and times will be announced at a later date.

NORD continues to work with the City to accelerate the rehabilitation of more facilities, parks and playgrounds. To date, 60 NORD rebuild projects are either in the planning, design or construction phase. The department is also working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to restore and return 14 facilities to the City. So far, FEMA has completed 4 of the fields, with 11 remaining. To date, FEMA has obligated $11.1 million for the restoration of NORD facilities, and the City has received $1.5 million from the state. The City estimates it will cost approximately $73 million to repair NORD facilities.
