Concert Date Change

The Gail Gilmore concert at Xavier University has been

Changed from April 6 to Monday April 13 at 7:00 pm

The Master Class will be held as scheduled for Sat. April 4

International Opera Singer in Concert at XU

International opera singer and Xavier University alumna

Gail Gilmore will visit her alma mater for a master class

and performance in April.

The mezzo-soprano will offer a master class on Saturday

April 4 at 1:00PM at the Xavier Music Recital Hall. The

class is free and open to the public.

Gilmore will perform in concert on Monday April 13 (new date)

at 7:00PM. The concert is also free and open to the public

“She is one of our most distinguished graduates,” said Wilfred

Delphin, Xavier’s artist-in-residence. “Xavier has produced

several international careers and she is one that is presently

enjoying an international following.”

Gilmore, a 1972 Xavier graduate, also studied at Indiana

University in Bloomington. She started her career in Germany.

She has performed at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Arena di

Verona (in Aida), in Milan at La Scala as Venus in Tannhäuse;

at the Metropolitan Opera and at Carnegie Hall as well as the

Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. In 1994 she made her debut at the

Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires as the Gräfin in Lulu, and at

the Prague Opera as Strauss' Salome.

1995 she had her debut as Tosca in Strasbourg. In 1996, she

debuted in Germany as Turandot, and in May 1997 she had

yet another very successful debut as Elektra. In early 1998,

she debuted in the title role of Fosca by the Brasilian composer

Carlos Gomes with a very successful tournee in major Brasilian

cities. As a versatile singer she also sings in many concerts.

She is well known for her "Opera Aria" concerts, but her

repertoire also includes Strauss' Four Last Songs, Berlioz's

La Mort de Cléopatre, and works by American composers

Barber, Berstein, Gershwin, etc.

Gilmore also has several recordings including an album of

spirituals and gospels as well as a recording with the Royal

Philharmonic Orchestra of London.

Her opera repertoire is extensive with roles as Lady Macbeth

in Macbeth, Eboli in Don Carlo, the title role in Elektra, Leonore

in Fidelio, Flora Tosca in Tosca, Abigaille in Nabucco, Ortrud in

Lohengrin, the Lady in Erwartung, Judith in Herzog Blaubart,

the title role in Fosca (Carlos Gomes) and the title role in Carl

Orff's ANTIGONE, and others.
