ANNUAL TREE AND PLANT SALE PROMOTES GREENER NEW ORLEANS
DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND PARKWAYS AND PARKWAY PARTNERS TO CO-HOST EVENT URGING CITIZENS TO RESTORE THE CITY'S URBAN CANOPY AND BEAUTIFY THEIR YARDS

NEW ORLEANS, LA ( March 24, 2009) -The City of New Orleans Department of Parks and Parkways along with Parkway Partners, a non-profit organization that supports the city with the beautification of its public green spaces, will co-host the City's Annual Tree and Plant Sale on Saturday, March 28 from 8 a.m. to noon at 2829 Gentilly Blvd.

"As we celebrate the 100th year of Parks and Parkways, we remain vigilant in revitalizing our neighborhoods with a continued focus on the beautification and restoration of our urban canopy that was damaged by the effects of Hurricane Katrina," said Ann Macdonald, Director of the Department of Parks and Parkways. "Licensed horticulturists along with our department's landscape architects and foresters will be on hand during the event to offer advice to our citizens about planting."

A large selection of trees, including citrus, and a variety of plants and hanging baskets will be sold during the event. The sale will focus on exciting rare plant varieties, native plants which love the south Louisiana climate and New Orleans favorites, like sweet olives, Japanese magnolias and hydrangeas. Citizens should bring a cart or wagon to help remove heavy items purchased. Local horticulturist, Dan Gill, will conduct a workshop on landscaping at 10a.m.

The replanting of New Orleans is vital to this city's recovery, not only because of the beauty and character that plants and trees add to the landscape, but also because of the environmental effects that they have on the air quality. Trees remove carbon dioxide from, and return oxygen to the environment and often serve as buffers and filters, adding protection by slowing winds down.

The City continues to partner with organizations such as Parks and Parkways to replace trees citywide. This year, through partnerships, the department has replanted more than 1,000 trees. Since Hurricane Katrina, the department has managed the removal of thousands of trees damaged by saltwater and or wind.
