World Water Awareness Day is Sunday, March 22, 2009

Section: Community

Michele Burton-Oatis

The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.

If you are like me, your water is running as you brush your teeth in the morning. You many even run the dishwasher twice just to make sure the dishes are extra clean. The truth is, many of us don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the value of water. But what if we had to live with less access to it like most of the World? Water is the most important thing in our lives. We cannot survive without it!
In late May, several members and groups from the community will gather to view art, listen to poets, speakers and watch films about water as limited resource both here in New Orleans and in the Middle East. There will be Educational materials for the public and prizes awarded to the contributors. Even if you cannot attend the event, do submit your haiku, photo or drawing as it can be part of the interactive mural.
