Southern University at New Orleans gets its day in Baton Rouge

NEW ORLEANS, LA - Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) announced today that the inaugural "SUNO Day at the Legislature" will happen on Monday, May 4, 2009 at 9 a.m. The university will have a display in the rotunda of the Louisiana State Capitol Building in Baton Rouge, and representatives of SUNO will visit both the House and Senate Chambers.

“This is appropriate as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of Southern University at New Orleans,” says Dr. Victor Ukpolo, the chancellor of SUNO. “It is a chance to do two things. First we want to engage legislators in substantive conversation about how SUNO has transformed many lives throughout the community through the academic support and opportunities we have provided to so many. Secondly, we can celebrate those legislators, present and past, who are SUNO alumni.”

Southern University at New Orleans alumni, current and past, who have served in the legislature include Representative Charmaine Marchand Stiaes (Dist. 99) as well as Jon Johnson, Irma Muse Dixon, Arthur Morrell and Johnny Jackson.
