SUNO School of Social Work to host one-day conference on impact of AIDS on children

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) School of Social Work’s Community Resource Center will have a one-day conference on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Astor Crowne Plaza (739 Canal St.) from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The conference will feature speakers and workshops focusing on information concerning issues, services and practices for children of color diagnosed with HIV or AIDS as well as children of color who have lost their caretakers due to AIDS. The conference will also examine the impact of the disease throughout the local, national and global communities.

“The conference is our way of addressing an international situation,” says Dr. Beverly Favré, Dean of SUNO’s School of Social Work. “Often attention is focused on the adults but little attention on the children infected with HIV and their death as a result of AIDS. It is documented that everyday 1,400 children under the age of 15 die of AIDS related illnesses, worldwide.”

Keynote speakers include Dr. Kevin U. Stephens, JD, Director of the New Orleans Health Department as well as Mrs. Josephine Okoronkwo (OH-koh-RON-kwoh), Director of the SUNO Student Development Center. Stephens will speak on the “Global Impact of HIV and Children” and Okoronkwo will present “The Nigerian Experience”.

In addition the conference there will be an ethics workshop from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. conducted by Dr. Ira Neighbors, professor of Social Work at SUNO.

Attendees can register, in person, at the School of Social Work on the SUNO Lake Campus, 6801 Press Drive, Building 33.
