TEEN LEADERS INVITE ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA MEMBERS TO HELP WIN ONLINE CHALLENGE

Gretna, LA – Teen leaders of The Teen Center for Non-Violence are asking all Greater New Orleans members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. to come to The Teen Center for Non-Violence on Saturday, March 21, 2009 to make an online pledge that will help the teens win a challenge to expand their center. The teens have to prove they can reach at least 660 online supporters worldwide to win money that will help them expand the teen center to take more of their peers off of the streets. The Teen Center for Non-Violence was founded by Alpha Kappa Alpha member Kimberly Dilosa in the summer of 2007 as a safe haven for teen hurricane survivors and their families. The center is raising awareness about the correlation between the increase in teen crime and suicide post-Katrina and the lack of mental health care being provided to teen hurricane survivors. The safe haven offers Greater New Orleans teenagers mental solace through mentoring, leadership development, cultural expression, service learning, and academic enrichment activities. Alpha Kappa Alpha members are asked to come to the Teen Center for Non-Violence between 11a-4pm to make a pledge and take pictures with the center’s founder. The Teen Center for Non-Violence is located at 2031 Hancock Street, Gretna, LA 70053. The hosts for the day are teen center success stories Kourtney Heart, (Edna Karr Magnet High School student and local R&B singing sensation) and Deshawn Dabney (O.P. Walker High School student and one of CNN’s Children of the Storm). DJ Polo, teen center member, local celebrity DJ and student at John Ehret High School, will provide backdrop music for the event. For more information on how to get involved with helping the teens win the online challenge to expand The Teen Center for Non-Violence, please call 504-366-9025.
