Councilmember-at-large Fielkow suggests hearing on alleged improper dumping of waste into a storm drain in the Lower 9th Ward

A Statement from Councilmember-at-Large Arnie Fielkow
Re: Illegal Dumping

March 16, 2009
Hon. Cynthia Willard-Lewis,

Chair, Sanitation Committee, 1300 Perdido St., New Orleans, La 70112

Re: Illegal Dumping

Dear Chairwoman Willard-Lewis:

I am greatly concerned about the media reports from yesterday regarding the alleged improper dumping of waste into a storm drain in the Lower 9th Ward. According to media reports, the owner of SDT Waste and Debris claims that the truck which did this dumping was stolen from its premises Saturday night.

Given the past allegations made with respect to improper dumping by this contracted company and the significant damage that such dumping brings to our community (especially a community as devastated as the Lower 9th Ward), I would like to respectfully suggest that, as Chair, you immediately review this situation and if necessary schedule a special meeting of the Council's Sanitation Committee on this topic. I am also copying New Orleans Police Superintendent, Warren Riley, and Sewage & Water Board Executive Director, Marcia St. Martin, so that they can also perform the necessary investigation. At a minimum, it needs to be determined what are the facts underlying this situation, how the event could have occurred, the environmental impact of this dumping for the neighborhood and the impact of the alleged activities on any contracts with the City of New Orleans.

I very much appreciate your attention to this important matter.

Yours very truly,

Arnie D. Fielkow, Vice President
