Tobacco tax to be proposed during the legislative session
Rep. Karen Carter Peterson, Speaker Pro Tem to announce bill to save lives and raise revenue
Louisiana Representative Karen Carter Peterson, along with the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Louisiana, will make the announcement of a proposed increase on the state’s tobacco tax. Currently at 36 cents per pack, Louisiana’s state excise tax on tobacco ranks 45th among the states with one of the lowest state tobacco taxes in the country.
WHEN: tomorrow! Tuesday, March 17, 1 P.M.
WHERE: Capitol Steps, Baton Rouge

INFO: Approximately 6,500 Louisianans die each year from tobacco-related causes and 6,600 Louisiana youth become new daily smokers each year. Along with the personal health costs, annual health care expenditures directly caused by tobacco use costs Louisiana $1.47 billion annually.
