HOUSING PROGRAMS FEATURED IN THE LOWER 9TH WARD
Sankofa Marketplace "Home Is Where the Heart Is"


New Orleans (March 11, 2009) - Sankofa Marketplace, a project of the Historic Lower 9th Ward Council for Arts and Sustainability, will host city-wide housing organizations Saturday, March 14th from 10am to 3pm during its monthly market. The theme this month is "Home Is Where the Heart Is." Market-goers will learn how to make homes "green", increase energy efficiency, sign up for home repairs/renovation and receive information on purchasing a new home.
Agencies scheduled to present and distribute information: Rebuilding Information Station, Historic Green; Rebuilding Together New Orleans and Operation Comeback, both are projects of the Preservation Resource Center; lowernine.org; and The Finance Authority of New Orleans.

The Sankofa Marketplace is a free, open-air event held at the corner of Caffin and St. Claude every second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can look forward to purchasing fresh produce and Louisiana wild caught shrimp. Access to community resources and information is available at each market, as well as art work from local artists and craftspeople. The marketplace also features an exhibition of Lower 9th ward history and culture each month.

The March 14 Sankofa Marketplace features:

Live music performances by Carl LeBlanc, and the Avant Garde Jazz Ensemble
Farmers Market with fresh vegetables and wild caught Louisiana shrimp
Ready to eat food: Seafood gumbo, shrimp jambalaya, spinach salad, red beans and rice, and vegetarian pasta by Daniel's on the Bayou
Grilled shrimp by Coy Le Beau
Health and Wellness Tent with free blood pressure screenings, onsite HIV testing, acupuncture, massage, and healthy food preparation demonstrations
Coffee bar provided by Baby's Coffee
