Statement on President Obama's dispatch of two Cabinet secretaries to visit New Orleans by Levees.Org

During the campaign President Obama demonstrated understanding that what happened in New Orleans was more the result of an engineering failure than a natural disaster.

The President has also committed to rebuilding our nation's infrastructure. There is no better example of what can happen when the nation fails to invest in its infrastructure than New Orleans.

We at Levees.Org would like to commend the President for his commitment to providing the region Category 5 protection and comprehensive coastal restoration.

During your trip to the Gulf Coast, you will examine policies that will hasten the recovery and ensure the safety of Americans in this region. As monies are appropriated to fix our flood protection system, it is so important that those funds are spent well.

For a cost of 5 million dollars, we, along with Senator Landrieu have advocated a completely independent and bipartisan analysis of the flood protection failures of 2005. It would
look at how the Corps designs, funds, builds and maintains our flood protection infrastructure and make recommendations to Congress on how the system could be changed to avoid another disaster and save billions in future tax payer dollars.
